PATTERN OF IITJEE-2008

Question Papers

There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Questions in these papers will be of objective type, which are to be answered on a specially designed machine-gradable sheet (ORS – Optical Response Sheet) using HB pencils only. Incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks.

Language and Font of Question Papers

Candidates can opt for Question Papers either in English or in Hindi. This option should be exercised while filling the application form, and it cannot be changed at any later stage.

Visually impaired candidates will be provided with question papers with 20% enlarged font. However, to avail this facility, candidates should make a request along with the application form.

Calculators and Log Tables

Use of calculators and log tables is NOT permitted in JEE-2008.

Aptitude Test for B.Arch. and B.Des.

Candidates called for counselling and desirous of joining the B.Arch. and B.Des. courses will be required to qualify in an Aptitude Test to be conducted at each counselling institute on June 21, 2008. The test will consist of two papers, each of two hours duration – from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, and from 2.00 pm to 4:00 pm. Candidates who fail to qualify in the Aptitude Test will not be eligible for admission to either B.Arch. or B.Des. courses. Question papers for aptitude test for B.Arch and B.Des will be in English only.

Ranking

Only those candidates who attempt both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for the ranking. Marks in Physics will be equal to marks in Physics section of Paper 1 + marks in Physics section of Paper 2. Similar procedure will be followed for Chemistry and Mathematics. Based on the cut-off marks in the individual subjects as well as the aggregate marks in the Examination, a common merit list will be prepared without any relaxed criteria. In addition, separate merit lists of candidates belonging to the SC, ST, and PD categories will be prepared with different relaxed norms relevant to their categories. While preparing these merit lists, if a candidate belongs to more than one category of relaxed norms, then he/she for the purpose of ranking shall be considered in all the categories in which he/she qualifies. There will be no separate list of wait-listed candidates.

Eligibility Conditions in IIT JEE 2008

A candidate has to satisfy all the eligibility conditions given below :

* A candidate can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years.
* Candidates appearing for JEE-2008 should have either passed in 2007 or should be appearing in 2008 in the qualifying examination listed in section 7.1 and should satisfy the eligibility criteria listed in section 7.2.
* Candidates should meet the age requirements given in section 7.4.
* Candidates should not have accepted admission by paying full fees at any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISMU, Dhanbad, through earlier JEE.

GATE 2009 Entrance Exam Notification

What is GATE ?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Admission to post graduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy or Master degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for Master/Doctoral programmes in Engineering/ Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must additionally secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. GATE qualification, however, is not required for candidates with Master degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy who may be seeking scholarship/assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.

The overall coordination and responsibility of conducting GATE 2009 lies with Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, designated as the Organizing Institute for GATE 2009.

GATE 2009 Eligibility

The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE 2009:

• Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/Pharmacy (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

• Master's degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

• Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master's degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master's degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.

• Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by IE(I), AME by ICE(I)) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

There are two different ways by which candidates can apply for GATE 2009 examination. They are

Step. 1 Obtain a Demand Draft

The candidates must obtain a Demand Draft, drawn on any nationalized bank in favor of Chairman of the corresponding zonal GATE Office, the website of which the candidate wishes to submit online Application.

2.Fill in the ONLINE application form Click here

You will have to first register to access the online application form. For registering, you will have to provide a login Id, password, first name, last name and email Id.

Click on 'online application' to view the form. FILL in the appropriate data. You will have to FILL in the payment details also. Therefore, it is essential that before you fill in the online application form make sure that you have the Demand Draft as mentioned above. You must enter the Demand Draft number, the 9-digit Bank Id or the MICR No. (that is next to the Demand Draft number on the DD) and the Bank name for the payment details.

3.PRINT the online application form

After submitting the online application, you will be able to generate a PDF document of the online application with your specific details/data. For this you must logon to the GATE website from a computer that has Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 and above. From the onscreen view of the PDF document that your browser projects, you must PRINT the generated PDF online application form.

Step 5. Post/Submission

Duly filled-in Application Form with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Registered or Speed post to the Chairman, GATE of the Zone, the website of which has been used for making ONLINE registration on or before Wednesday, October 29, 2008.

Step. 1 Procurement of Application Form

Candidate can obtain a packet containing (i) OFFLINE Application Form (ii) Information Brochure (iii) Acknowledgment Card (iv) Envelope from:

2. Zonal GATE Office by sending a request letter and TWO self-addressed slips along with a Demand Draft for appropriate amount.
3. Zonal GATE Office after handing over Demand Draft for appropriate amount.

2.Fill in the BDS cum application form

Read the Information brochure. FILL in the BDS cum application form by referring to the chapter-5 of the Information brochure.

Step 3. Obtain SC/ST/PD/OBC (non creamy layer) Certificate

SC/ST/OBC (non creamy layer) and Disability Certificate should be obtained from appropriate authority, if applicable.

New course is a win-win for students, university

MUMBAI: The University of Mumbai has tied up with UK varsities to offer a one-year master's courses from next year. Some foreign universities have adopted collaborative arrangements with Indian institutions, mainly deemed universities, to offer programmes where students are taught on a desi campus for a part of the programme but take home a foreign degree. But the University of Mumbai will be the first state varsity to enter into such an arrangement which, incidentally, will reach out to over 5 lakh students.

The university's academic council, which is meeting later this month, is likely to clear the draft curricula for the one-year courses. They include a master's in management, master's in international business, master's in human resource management and master's in medical technology and laboratory management (see box). Affiliated arts, science and commerce colleges will then be permitted to apply to the varsity to offer these courses, which will take off from the 2009 academic year.

Currently, the university has a similar tie-up with the University of Westminster for a course in animation, in which students can start the course on the Kalina campus and then move on to London for the remaining six months and receive a master's degree from there. But this new initiative for the master's courses will allow thousands of city college students to get a degree from a world-class foreign university.

The Mumbai varsity and UK colleges will soon plan details on fees and scholarships. The arrangement, city college principals feel, will allow students to avail of an international education and degree at a lower cost. This, apart from allowing the Mumbai university and its affiliated institutions more flexibility in course-designing at a time when foreign varsities are knocking on Indian gates.

The Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) will hold the Combined Medical Services Examination, 2009 on 18th January, 2009. The examination will be held at various centers across the country.

Conditions of Eligibility:

1. Age Limits:

A candidate for this examination must not have attained the age of 32 years as on 1st January, 2009, i.e. the candidate must have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1977.

The upper age limit is relaxable for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes/Physically Handicapped and certain other categories of candidates to the extent specified in the Notice.

HOW TO APPLY:

(a) The UPSC have developed an Application Form common for all their examinations which can be processed on computerized machines. This Application Form alongwith an Information Brochure containing general instructions for filling up the Form, an Acknowledgement Card and an envelope for sending the application is obtainable from the designated Head Post Office/Post Offices throughout the country as listed in Appendix-III of Notice against cash payment of Rs. 20/- (Rupees twenty only). Form should be purchased from the designated Post Offices only and not from any other agency. This Form can be used only once and for only one examination. Candidates must use the Form supplied with the Information Brochure only and they should in no case use photocopy/reproduction/unauthorisedly printed copy of the Form.

4. Fee:
Rs. 100/- (Rupees One hundred only) through Central Recruitment Fee Stem only. SC/ST/PH candidates are exempted from payment of Fees. (OBC candidates are required to pay full fee).

Applications are invited in the prescribed form for All India Post Graduate Medical/Dental Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE-2009) to be conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Sunday, the 11th January, 2009 for admission under 50% seats quota in various Postgraduate (MD/MS/Diploma & MDS) courses in Medical and Dental Colleges in the country run by the Union of India, State Governments (except Government of Andhra Pradesh and J&K) and Municipal or other local authorities.



AIPGMEE 2009 Eligibility Criteria:

(1) Only Indian nationals are eligible to apply.

(2) The candidate must possess MBBS/BDS degree from a recognized Medical/Dental College or a foreign degree included in the schedules to the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 AND full registration either from the Medical/Dental Council of India or State Medical/Dental Council after completing the compulsory rotating internship.

(3) Candidates who have obtained MBBS/BDS from Medical/Dental Colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are not eligible to apply. However, candidates who were nominated by the Government of India (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare/D.G.H.S., New Delhi) to do MBBS/BDS from Medical/Dental Colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are eligible to apply, subject to submission of requisite documents specified in the Prospectus.

(4) The candidates should complete the required period of 12 months pre-registration internship from a recognized Hospital on or before 31st March, 2009.

The Prospectus-cum-Application Form costing Rs. 1000/- for General/OBC candidates and (Rs. 800/- in case of SC/ST candidates) inclusive of examination fee can be obtained in the following manner:

IMPORTANT:

(1) Candidates must obtain Prospectus-cum-application forms ONLY from an authorized branch of S.B.I. or by post from Examination Section of AIIMS. Forms obtained from an unauthorized source will be rejected.

(2) Candidates are advised to procure prospectus-cum-application forms as early as possible instead of waiting for the last date. MU to introduce nine ‘intensive’ postgraduate programmes

The courses will make students ‘ready for the market’, say educationists who studied UK system

The recent visit by a delegation of Mumbai educationists to the universities in the UK, will prove to be a beneficial one for future postgraduate aspirants. The reason — Mumbai University, and some of its affiliated colleges are now in the process of introducing one-year, intensive postgraduate programmes that aim to mould students to become more adept in their respective fields.

The delegation — led by Mumbai Sheriff and HR College principal Indu Shahani, and Mumbai University vice-chancellor Vijay Khole, along with several other college principals — visited UK’s leading educational institutions to observe the top study policies being followed there.

“PG programmes in the UK are being converted from two years to intensive one-year programmes to aid students. So we mulled over the option of starting a similar system here, which will help students tremendously. Subsequently, we are now in the process of developing a total of nine such intensive, and important academic programmes of a one-year duration,” said Khole.

The primary focus is to design courses that are applied practically and make students “ready for the market”.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh was recently briefed about the observations made by the delegation during its UK visit. “We wanted to inform the PM about the intention of our visit, our learning and to receive his opinion on the matter. He was supportive of our suggestions, and stressed the need to implement more skill-oriented courses, and vocational education”, said Ruia College principal, Suhas Pednekar.

Colleges are also helping in developing the courses, with HR College helping to initiate four courses, and Sophia College developing five programmes for the university.
“Several other colleges are helping us in this endeavour. The programmes will have to go through the board of studies, and will have to be presented to the academic council for approval,” said Shahani.

Sophia College principal, Anila Verghese said, that the core content has been developed with the help of the university. “Once approved, they can be implemented from the next academic year. Colleges which want to run the programmes will have to seek the necessary permission from the university,” said Verghese.

She said that since the programmes will be of a 12-month duration, while developing the curriculum, the focus will be on quality.

“Utmost care was given to ensure that there is no compromise on quality,” said Verghese.
